Supporting evidence
CKS identified no guidelines or studies specifically about the management of people presenting with breathlessness in primary care. The recommendations in this CKS topic are mainly based on expert opinion and observations in medical reference books.
The evidence on the emergency management of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, community-acquired pneumonia in adults, and supraventricular tachycardia, as well as the emergency use of oxygen can be found in guidelines from the British Thoracic Society and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network [SIGN and BTS, 2009], the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence [National Clinical Guideline Centre, 2010], the British Thoracic Society [British Thoracic Society, 2001; British Thoracic Society, 2008], and the Arrhythmia & Sudden Death Cardiac Subgroup [Arrhythmia & Sudden Cardiac Death Subgroup, 2007].
