Bunions - Background information
What is it?

  • A bunion is a prominent first metatarsal head, sometimes associated with bursitis, which may be inflamed and occasionally ulcerate. Bunions can cause pain when walking or wearing shoes [Merck, 2003; Vanore et al, 2003; Ferrari, 2007].
    • An abductus angle (the angle formed between the metatarsal and abducted hallux) greater than 15 degrees is considered abnormal [Ferrari et al, 2004].
    • Not all people with bunions are symptomatic [Vanore et al, 2003].
