Contraception - Background information
Where can people get contraception?
Contraception is widely available in the UK from a number of sources, and is provided free by the NHS for women and men of all ages.
- Contraception is available free of charge from:
- General practices.
- Condoms are not prescribable in the NHS, and are therefore not available from all GPs. However, local arrangements allow some GPs to participate in a condom scheme.
- Contraception and sexual health clinics.
- Young person's clinics or Brook clinics (www.brook.org.uk) — these have an upper age limit.
- NHS 'walk-in centres' (in England only) provide emergency contraception, but only advise on regular contraception.
- Many genito-urinary clinics in the UK provide emergency contraception and male condoms.
