CKS is no longer commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). NICE remains committed to providing a replacement service for CKS and is currently reviewing its options. In the meantime, although CKS content is now not being maintained, it still remains relevant and will continue to be made available. CKS content was generated under a programme of topic creation and update. Contraception
In the right clinical topic?
Age from 13 to 60 years
This CKS topic covers contraceptive methods currently used in the UK. It incorporates recommendations from guidelines published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH), formerly the Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Healthcare (FFPRHC).
This CKS topic does not cover how to fit copper intrauterine devices, the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system, diaphragms, or caps; how to insert contraceptive implants; or how to teach natural family planning methods. This is because specific training is required for each of these activities. This CKS topic also does not cover the management of women requesting emergency contraception.
There are separate CKS topics on Contraception - emergency, Amenorrhoea, Chlamydia - uncomplicated genital, Endometriosis, Infertility, Menorrhagia and Pre-conception - advice and management.
The target audience for this CKS topic is healthcare professionals working within the NHS in England, and providing first contact or primary health care. Information leaflets on each contraceptive method are provided by the fpa (Family Planning Association).
