CKS is no longer commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). NICE remains committed to providing a replacement service for CKS and is currently reviewing its options. In the meantime, although CKS content is now not being maintained, it still remains relevant and will continue to be made available. CKS content was generated under a programme of topic creation and update. To check if the topic you are viewing is current or out of date, please refer to the topic publication details by clicking on the 'How up-to-date is this topic?' link in the left hand menu on individual topic pages.

Choosing your search term

Suggested search terms

  • As you begin to type into the 'I'm looking for' box, the CKS search will suggest search terms for you, based on common words and phrases from CKS topics.
  • Select one of the suggested search terms using the mouse or arrow keys. Alternatively, continue typing your own search term.

Choosing your own search term

  • Searches are not case sensitive.
  • By default, the CKS search finds only pages which contain all of the words you have entered. There is no need to include 'and' between terms.
  • The order in which you enter search words will affect the search results.
  • To make a search more precise, add more words into the search box.
  • If you want to search for an exact phrase, put quotation marks around your search term.
Example: "previous myocardial infarction" will not find 'myocardial infarction' alone.
  • CKS search will recognize some common mis-spellings or phonetic spellings, and suggest the correct words.
  • Boolean operators (such as 'and, or, not') are not recognized.
  • CKS Search does not recognize special characters or symbols, or common words such as "where" or "how".
  • If you wish to exclude pages containing certain terms, type '-' before the term you wish to exclude.
Example: "Hypertension -pregnancy" will return results about hypertension, but not where the word 'pregnancy' is also found.
