  • Several UK guidelines on the management of hepatitis B were used to develop this topic.
    • United Kingdom national guideline on the management of the viral hepatitides A, B, and C was developed and published by the Clinical Effectiveness Group (CEG) of the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), and can be downloaded at www.bashh.org (pdf) [BASHH, 2008]. It is an evidence-based guideline covering the management of hepatitis B in both primary care and secondary care.
    • Eye of the needle is published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and can be downloaded at www.hpa.org.uk (pdf) [HPA, 2008]. It focuses on the management of occupational exposure (for example needlestick injuries) to hepatitis B and other blood-borne infections.
    • Shooting up. Infections among injecting drug users in the United Kingdom 2008. An update: October 2009 is published by the HPA, and can be downloaded at www.hpa.org.uk (pdf) [HPA, 2009a]. This guideline focuses on the management of injecting drug users.
    • Guidance for hepatitis A and B vaccination of drug users in primary care and criteria for audit is published by the Royal College of General Practitioners, and can be downloaded at www.rcgp.org.uk (pdf) [RCGP, 2005].
