Payment and availability of travel vaccinations

  • The following vaccines are available on the NHS (whatever the purpose of travel) for travel overseas:
    • Typhoid fever
    • Hepatitis A
    • Poliomyelitis
  • Rabies is available on the NHS only for travellers working overseas whose occupation puts them at high risk of exposure to the virus.
  • The following vaccines are not routinely available on the NHS for overseas travel:
    • Meningococcal meningitis
    • Yellow fever
    • Japanese encephalitis
    • Tick-borne encephalitis
    • Cholera
    • Hepatitis B
  • Payment for the prescribing of vaccines for travel purposes is at the discretion of the practice. Sometimes an administration charge may be made; therefore, the exact cost of immunization may vary between practices as well as between vaccination centres.
  • Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine can be obtained on a named-patient basis only.
  • Yellow fever vaccines are available only in designated centres.
