Lipid modification - primary and secondary CVD prevention
In the right clinical topic?

Age from 18 years onwards

This CKS topic is based on national guidelines published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE):

This CKS topic covers the reduction of cardiovascular risk through modification of blood lipid profile. The focus is on drug treatments to reduce total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Non-drug interventions to modify blood lipids (e.g. cardioprotective diet, physical activity, weight loss) are covered in the CKS topic on CVD risk assessment and management.

This CKS topic does not cover the management of blood lipids in people who have Type 2 diabetes or a myocardial infarction; or familial hypercholesterolaemia; as these are covered in the CKS topics on Diabetes type 2, Hypercholesterolaemia - familial, and MI - secondary prevention.

There are separate CKS topics on Alcohol - problem drinking, Angina, Antiplatelet treatment, Atrial fibrillation, Heart failure - chronic, Hypertension - not diabetic, Obesity, Smoking cessation, and Stroke and TIA.

The target audience for this CKS topic is healthcare professionals working within the NHS in England, and providing first contact or primary health care.
