CKS is no longer commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). NICE remains committed to providing a replacement service for CKS and is currently reviewing its options. In the meantime, although CKS content is now not being maintained, it still remains relevant and will continue to be made available. CKS content was generated under a programme of topic creation and update. Lower urinary tract symptoms in men, age-related (including symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia/hypertrophy)
In the right clinical topic?

Age from 12 years onwards

This CKS topic is based on the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline The management of lower urinary tract symptoms in men [NICE, 2010].

This CKS topic covers the primary care management of men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) that are not caused by infection, inflammation, neurologic disease, drugs, or cancer. The scope of the topic includes the management of voiding (obstructive) symptoms, urinary retention, stress incontinence, overactive bladder, nocturnal polyuria, and post-voiding symptoms. LUTS includes symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, but this term is misleading and is therefore not used in this topic.

There are separate CKS topics on Prostatitis - acute, Prostatitis - chronic, Pyelonephritis - acute, Urethritis - male, and Urinary tract infection (lower) - men. There is also a CKS referral guideline on Urological cancer - suspected, which reflects NICE guidance and covers suspected cancer of the prostate, bladder, kidney, and penis.

The target audience for this CKS topic is healthcare professionals working within the NHS in England, and providing first contact or primary health care.
