Pelvic inflammatory disease - Background information
What is it?
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a general term for infection of the upper genital tract. Infection spreads upwards from the endocervix causing one or more of the following [BASHH, 2005a; CDC, 2006; RCOG, 2009]:
- Endometritis.
- Salpingitis.
- Parametritis.
- Oophoritis.
- Tubo-ovarian abscess.
- Pelvic peritonitis.
