Urethritis - male - Background information
What is it?

  • Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra, and is usually (but not always) caused by a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Urethritis is classified as gonococcal urethritis, non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), or persistent/recurrent urethritis.
    • The term non-specific urethritis (NSU) applies to non-gonococcal, non-chlamydial urethritis, and to avoid confusion should be avoided.
    • Persistent/recurrent urethritis is urethritis occurring 30–90 days after treatment for acute NGU.
